A perusal of the news turns up exactly what not to do in the case of HP's spying on their board of directors, the resultant resignations and half-assedery that's trying to placate a rather startled and confused corporation.
Rule #2 is Don't spy on your own board of directors, don't pretext journalists and do not get defiant in the face of the scrutiny, you will only come off looking stupid, ineffective and out-of-touch.
