Because we are going to need more prisons if 24% of state high-schoolers likely to drop out. A less educated work force means less income means more likely to be forced into a grey or black market economy to survive equals year over year upticks in crime and downticks in quality of living.
That is, since we're already screwing over plenty of kids right now, they'll repay the "favor" down the line in requiring incarceration because they had no other choices, thanks to an increasingly crappy public education system that's being cut even more.
The saddest part is that I'm a tiny cog in the system and see and know more about the inner workings than I'd really care to. It isn't pretty nor is it confidence inspiring.
