Mesa cheerleader's suspension raises school policy questions because the cheerleader, Brittney Hosac, was suspended from cheerleading for a year in the wake of getting busted for underage drinking. Other students and athletes busted at the same party did not receive anywhere near as harsh punishments.
The school says they allow coaches to dictate punishments for instances like this but that's a total cop out and means that there are different rules for different students based on their group affiliation. That's bogus and everyone can pretty plainly see that.
And the school officials are copping out by allowing coaches to enforce their rules. Coaches don't give a damn about rules, they give a damn about winning games and if their star quarterback gets busted for drinking or something worse then they can decide their star's learned his lesson and let him play. That's ridiculous. There's a clear conflict of interest there as the coach's job is tied to his team's performance and he wants to win as many games as possible and so he'd be unlikely to sanction his players properly.
A school (much like a society) needs to have the same rules and laws that apply to everyone regardless of standing, group affiliation or star status. Of course there's a double standard in the real world too but that's more based on socio-economic status (rich people can hire better lawyers etc.) than being a good athlete.
Rule #312 is Double Standards for Student Athletes are Totally Bogus
