Maypearl Student With Gun Remains Suspended After Hearing
The headline is misleading because the gun in question was his father's, it was unloaded and his dad accidentally left the handgun in his son's truck that he'd borrowed to go hunting.
I get that schools have to be hyper-vigilant and protective against the next Columbine wanna-bes.
But there needs to be some thought applied to the rules and, in this case, the circumstances would lead a mediator to conclude that the kid posed no threat to himself, other students or faculty. His father may be a bit of a forgetful dumbass but that shouldn't be held against the kid.
And there is the likelihood of long term harm to the kid's career if he was being scouted by baseball scouts and can now no longer play. The school system is opening itself up to lawsuits by applying the absolute letter of the rule in this case where it is just unwarranted.
Notwithstanding the tangential way the weapon was found, dogs sniffing for drugs which they did not find but the officers did find the unloaded handgun.
Rule #304 is Don't Forget to Take Your Gun Out of Your Son's Truck
