#393 Don't Follow the Herd

Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA, tries new approach to school discipline — suspensions drop 85%

The new approach? Instead of auto-suspensions for a kid acting out in class, the principal sits down with the kid and asks him what is going on. A discipline problem is rarely an isolated incident and the school has seen beyond the immediate event to the larger picture.

The herd mentality is to punish, suspend, expel and otherwise use fear and retribution as a means of maintaining order. But fear is a terrible motivator and causes rebellion and discontent. The herd is a bully that is bigger and stronger than a single student and uses that strength to beat down that student.

That same strength could be applied in a positive way to effectively alter the course of that student's life by intervening in a constructive manner.

Rule #393 is Don't Follow the Herd
